If anyone wants to serve me, he must follow me, and where I am, my servant will
be too. || John 12:26 || NLT ||
be too. || John 12:26 || NLT ||
The primary New Testament Greek word for "slave" is doulos. But
here the term John uses, translated "servant" is diakonos, which can also
be translated "slave." Jesus often uses two words interchangeably. (see Mk.
10:43f)
How many times have we wished, "If only I could be with Jesus." How often
have we complained, "He seems so far away from me." Here in John, Jesus gives us
the answer to this desire to be with Him; we must become His servants, His
slaves. If we want to be "where I am," it can only be as that man or woman He
owns as an obedient slave. We must follow in order to serve. We must serve in
order to keep company with Jesus, our Master.
